Kiersten is the creative genius behind Lunch Punch, the coolest thing to happen to sandwiches since sliced bread! Kiersten shares with us how all the cool little joeys take their apples to school. :)

"A" is for an Aussie Apple
In Australia, some children take their apples to school like this. It's a simple way to keep an apple fresh but easy and fun to eat.
All you need?
- 1 juicy apple
- 1 clean, washed rubber band
- 1 knife ("that's not a knoife, this is a knoife!")...Sorry couldn't resist the Crocodile Dundee reference.
Cut your apple 4 times as shown. Be careful to cut far enough away from the core to avoid the seeds.

Then put it back together like a block puzzle.
Put the rubber band around the chubby apple's waist.

Pack it in the lunchbox.
Enjoy. :)

Isn't that brilliant?
Kiersten, super star sandwich cutter queen of the universe, can be found on Facebook and Twitter. Well, not really on Twitter. She hasn't tweeted anything yet, but I'm sure she'll break down and chirp some fun tidbits sooner or later. :)
Thank you, Kiersten! :)

How nifty is that?!
Noice! That's how I cut the kids apples but it never occured to me to put it back together. AND it's exotic 'cuz it's an AUSSIE apple. : )
I love this! This is how I cut apples anyway, but putting it back together with the rubber band is brilliant.
OK, now my bento-brain is kicking in. How fun would it be to cut two similarly sized red and green apples this way and then mix up the colors when you put them back together?
I do the same as Karla, but never thought to put it back together either.
that's adorable!
my mum actually used to do this for me when i was younger, in canada. then she'd wrap it in plastic wrap. now i know she wasn't the only clever one!
We use the apple corer slicer, and cut almost to the bottom, then seal it back up. Then you get the slices, just peel them off when you get to lunch! It's a great take on this idea!
Cute idea! I use the apple corer slicer too but never thought of putting it back together!
Thank you for posting this and the link to the lunch punch, I just ordered the sandwishes and the critter cutter. I had ordered the easylunchboxes before I saw your post and am anxiously awaiting them. Oh and I put your button on my blog!
Does this stop the apple from browning?
I'd imagine this would stop browning if you put it all back together quickly, as the surfaces would have less exposure to oxygen. Very clever! My boys wont eat browned apples.
Oh, wow! This is simply brilliant!! I bet that helps it stay more fresh and not brown as badly, too! Thanks for sharing!
That is such a great idea! How silly that we hadn't thought to do that before!
Oh, and I loved the Crocodile Dundee reference. It was not lost on me (snicker).

wouldn't the apple oxidised?
Only one prob - how does one fit a whole round apple into any of the bento-type lunch boxes? We are using the ELB's here and there's no way an apple is going to fit with it being "whole".
I haven't tried this fun trick yet, but keeping the apple sealed back up *should* keep it from browning. It's exposure to air that makes cut apples go brown. I haven't tried it yet, I can't find a rubberband in my house to save my life. If you have trouble with browning you can always dip the cut sides of apple in a little juice - anything with vitamin C works (ascorbic acid).
Chrisy - of course this wouldn't fit *inside* a bento box (it *would* fit in a Goodbyn though), but as a take-along snack it would be great! My kids always have a separate snack. If you have the ELB lunchbags to go with your ELB boxes you can carry the apple in there. :)
What a cool trick! I don't have kids to do it for (yet) BUT I would love to do it just for me!
Yes it is brilliant! And it's like a puzzle for the kids, super cool trick thanks for sharing!
What a great idea! My son loves apples, but recently lost his two front teeth. This is PERFECT for him!
love the idea!!!! and so easy! thanks for sharing the info :) its amazing to take to the office without carring a knife hmmm :)
Simple and brilliant! Thanks
Fantastic!
File under "why didn't I think of that?"
Hello!? How neat is that!!! Thanks for sharing this simple delightful way to carry a cut apple.
My Dad used to do this for the four of us, but he'd cut up two apples and two oranges, then switch the segments so we would each get two quarters of apple and two quareters of orange, and we called them Beach Balls. Obviously the orange juice kept the apple from going brown.
Hi, I just wanted to say thanks for the idea. I tried it for the first time today and posted it with a link back to your site. http://whatcanheeat.blogspot.com/2010/10/blog-post_06.html
But does the apple taste like rubber band?
Aussie Apple? It is a great idea but being Australian and early childhood teacher in in Australia for many years I have NEVER seen it done like that before. Great idea though.
Funkymunkee, this trick was passed to me from Kiersten of Lunch Punch who is an Aussie. She asked me what I wanted to call it and I suggested Aussie Apple, after her. :)
Yeah....then I can try this for my girl. I used to soak in salt water but I feel it is not as fresh it is. Many thanks
Like the idea but not sure I'd trust my 12-year-old boy in the lunchroom with a rubber band...
LOL! That made me laugh. :)
