somethin' fishy is going on

This is the bento box I packed for my little girl's preschool lunch today.

As it turned out though, I ended up deciding to keep her home at the last minute because we are smack dab in the middle of the dreaded potty training and I don't want to break our momentum. So at lunchtime I got to see her reaction to her lunch, which was very adorable. A very dramatic intake of air and her squeaky little girl voice squealing "did you make this fishy lunch for MEEEE, mama? Did you? I lub it!". Ah, such cuteness. :)

here fishy, fishy, fishy

Packed in a Sassy box, my cute girl had a sandwich (tuna, of course!) on whole grain bread cut with the fish/dolphin sandwich cutter from The Lunch Punch "Critter Cutters" set, a little silicone cup of Goldfish crackers. And on the left she has a fish-shaped hard boiled egg, clementine orange segments, and in the little dish is kiwi fruit and strawberries.

Did you notice that the fish-shaped egg doesn't quite look like the regular fish boiled egg shape you have seen before from the egg mold?
shaped eggs!
Hmmmm. There is definitely something fishy going on here. ;-)

I actually made this shaped egg by using a mini onigiri shaper! Onigiri actually means "rice ball" and usually refers to rice compacted into shapes for bento boxes. But by using a smaller sized egg and gently (very gently!) guiding it into the mold while it was very hot I was able to use it for an egg shaper. Some of the details around the mid section and face didn't conform fully, so I used a paring knife to bring out those details. The indents making the fishy eyes and tail creases were part of the mold press already.

LOVE this one! My egg molds are too big! It's like I have to have giant eggs to make them. That's a great idea to use the onigiri shaper.

That's really cute. I don't think I'd ever have the patience to do the eggs!
I bought noah's ark cookie cutters today at Michaels - I think they are the same ones you have. I'm very excited about them!

I love that dolphin sandwich! I can see I'm going to have to break down and get some of those cutters.

Audrey might actually consider tuna fish sandwich if I had a fish punch. I will have to look for one of those.

Great blog you have here! I host a link up party every Tuesday called Tot Tuesdays where you can link up crafts, activities, teaching resources, parenting stories or tips, recipes and things you’ve made for your toddler. I’d love it if you’d stop by sometime & link up!
